The following weavings are from the Transitional period, approximately late 1880's to 1910's. The Transitional period refers to the time frame when weavers transitioned from weaving primarily wearing blankets to rugs at the suggestion of the traders - traders recognized the demand for Navajo rugs on the East coast. The Transitional Period was prior to when regional styles became the norm. Therefore the weavers had "carte blanche" as far as designs. Very interesting time in the life of Navajo art!
