Steve Getzwiller
Author: THE FINE ART OF NAVAJO WEAVING
Steve Getzwiller grew up on a cattle ranch in Benson Arizona and visited the Amerind Foundation in the Dragoon Mountains as a boy.
Charlie DiPeso, the Director at the time, took Steve under his wing and introduced him to some of the finest art of indigenous Americans and other cultures. This fired a spark in Steve, to follow a path of less traveled.
Steve Getzwiller has been working with the Navajo for over 35 years. He has been making trips to the Navajo Reservation monthly, never missing a month. His name has become synonymous with the finest contemporary Navajo textiles available.
He has encouraged Navajo artists to weave designs that stretch their artistic abilities, using colors that are pleasing in combination, and emphasizing the need for quality in the weave itself. He offers to the world the finest Navajo Weavings available and continues to work with weavers to surpass their previous heights of excellence.
Navajo weaving of today has become a fine art, Considering the cultural transformations that have taken place on the Navajo Reservation over the past 100 years, this art form continues to evolve. Mr. Getzwiller has witnessed many of these changes in recent years and is working tirelessly to cultivate the continuation of this indigenous art form of the Southwest.
