About this weaving

This striking Yei pictorial rug showcases a towering female figure rendered in luminous light gray, vibrant red, deep black, and cream against a spacious background. Standing over 8 feet tall, the weaving features the sacred Yei dressed in traditional garments with natural black accents. A graceful stepped border frames the composition, anchored by Spider Woman cross designs on either side. The weaver has intentionally incorporated subtle irregularities throughout, honoring traditional spiritual practices. Every element—from the natural gray wool to the hand-dyed aniline reds and overdyed blacks—reflects meticulous craftsmanship, with all materials hand-carded, hand-spun, and colored using time-honored techniques.

This weaving was part of the 2016 Woven Holy People exhibit at Nizhoni Ranch Gallery and is on page 13 of the catalog for the show.

Taking part in the Tucson Desert Art Museum Exhibit Titled: Sacred Dancers: Ceremonial Navajo Weavings.  December 15, 2021 to June 25, 2022.
